Paul Laverty Charged Over T-Shirt at Edinburgh Protest

Renowned screenwriter Paul Laverty has been charged by Police Scotland for allegedly “showing support for a proscribed organisation” during a pro-Palestine protest in Edinburgh.

The 68-year-old, best known for his long-time collaboration with filmmaker Ken Loach on critically acclaimed films such as I, Daniel Blake, Sweet Sixteen, and The Wind That Shakes the Barley, was arrested following a demonstration outside St Leonards Police Station.

It is understood that the charge relates to a T-shirt Laverty wore during the protest, which authorities claim displayed support for a banned group.

Police confirmed that Laverty has been released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date. A report on the incident will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

The arrest has sparked debate around freedom of expression, particularly in the context of public demonstrations related to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
