HARLAN COUNTY, KY — A man from Closplint is facing multiple charges after a domestic dispute escalated into a standoff involving gunfire directed at law enforcement officers, according to the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office.
Stacey Huff, 51, was arrested late Saturday night and charged with:
Fourth-degree assault
Two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer
Deputies say Huff was highly intoxicated and had allegedly held family members at knifepoint inside his home. He also reportedly threatened them with a firearm.
When police arrived, they found the victims fleeing across a nearby bridge. Officers, including Deputy Jesse Howard and Evarts Assistant Police Chief Bryan Napier, identified themselves to Huff — who then opened fire on them.
Fortunately, no officers were injured.
A one-hour negotiation followed, ending around 12:30 a.m. Sunday when Huff surrendered peacefully. He was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Harlan County Detention Center.
The incident took place in Closplint, a community roughly 175 miles southeast of Lexington.
