ADDU, Maldives — Abdulla Milhan, a resident of Funoas, Meedhoo – Addu, has been arrested for allegedly running a scam through fake listings on Facebook Marketplace.

Police say Milhan posted fraudulent advertisements for goods, received payments from unsuspecting buyers, and failed to deliver the promised items. The arrest was made by the Addu Police and Anti-Scam Center under a court order following several complaints.

Investigations revealed that Milhan repeatedly extorted money, which was deposited into various bank accounts. Authorities also discovered that some account holders were knowingly involved in the scam, receiving financial benefits in return.

In three confirmed cases, Milhan fraudulently obtained at least MVR 16,000. Following his arrest, he was presented before a court and has been remanded in custody for 15 days.

Police have warned of a growing trend of online scams using fake listings on Facebook Marketplace. They urge the public to avoid transferring money before receiving goods and to verify sellers’ identities before making purchases.
