Fruitport Township, MI — A 38-year-old man, Alexae Kamron Johnson, was arrested for allegedly using a chemical device to create a distraction during a theft at a Meijer store in Fruitport Township.
On September 25, at approximately 4:30 p.m., authorities responded to reports of a “noxious gas” emanating from the store. Upon arrival, first responders observed a small “chemical cloud” in the center of the store, with a strong chlorine smell, according to the Fruitport Township Police Department.
Investigators discovered a small plastic bottle in the home goods section, which was releasing pool chemicals into the air. The substance was safely removed, and four individuals sought medical treatment at a local hospital. They were later treated and released.
More than a month later, Alexae Kamron Johnson was arrested on charges including first-degree retail fraud and placing an explosive device with intent to alarm. Johnson, who had been previously incarcerated on unrelated charges, was arraigned and is currently held at Muskegon County Jail.
