NEWARK, NJ — Ibraheem Muhammad, a convicted felon from East Orange, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to drug trafficking and firearms charges, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced.
Muhammad, 39, previously admitted before U.S. District Judge Brian R. Martinotti to three charges:
Possession of a firearm and ammunition as a felon
Possession of controlled substances with intent to distribute
Possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime
Muhammad’s arrest on May 9, 2022, followed surveillance by law enforcement, who observed him leaving an East Orange apartment and conducting a suspected drug transaction. Officers recovered heroin on the scene, as well as apartment keys. A subsequent search of the apartment led to the discovery of:
Quantities of heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl
Drug packaging materials
Approximately $14,000 in cash
A loaded Girsan 9mm semi-automatic handgun
Additional ammunition
In addition to the 10-year sentence, Muhammad will serve three years of supervised release upon completing his prison term.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the East Orange Police Department. Prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Farhana C. Melo and Aja Espinosa of the Economic Crimes Unit in Newark.
