Ibtissame Lachgar Arrested in Morocco Over Blasphemy Charges

LGBT activist detained for wearing “Allah is a lesbian” T-shirt

by Sophia Bennett

Ibtissame Lachgar, a 50-year-old Moroccan LGBT rights campaigner and co-founder of the Alternative Movement for Individual Freedoms, was arrested on blasphemy allegations after posting photos of herself wearing a T-shirt with the slogan “Allah is a lesbian.”

The activist remains in custody as authorities investigate the images and accompanying Instagram caption, which criticized Islam as “fascist, phallocratic and misogynistic.” Her lawyer, Naima Elguellaf, confirmed the trial has been postponed until August 27.

Lachgar reported receiving thousands of sexist insults and death threats following the post. Under Morocco’s penal code, blasphemy convictions can carry up to two years in prison and fines exceeding 200,000 dirhams.

The case highlights ongoing tensions around freedom of expression and religious sensitivities in Morocco.
