ROYAL OAK — Nathaniel Joshua-Olson Rockwell, 32, formerly of Alpena, was arrested by Royal Oak Police for first-degree murder, multiple felony firearm charges, and felonious assault.

Police responded to reports of gunfire around noon on Thursday at Devon Park Apartments on Crooks Road. Officers found Rockwell near the scene and took him into custody without incident.

The victim, 65-year-old Gregory Hill of Southfield, was found about 100 feet away from the altercation site. Hill, a maintenance worker at the apartment complex, was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency medical efforts.

Witnesses said Rockwell was involved in a heated argument with another tenant before retrieving a handgun from his car. The tenant fled, but Rockwell then shot Hill, who was nearby but not part of the dispute.

Rockwell, who has no previous criminal record, was arraigned Monday and denied bond. His next court date is August 11 in Royal Oak District Court.
