Mohali police arrested Vikramjit Singh, 48, from Jalandhar on Thursday at Mumbai International Airport as he attempted to flee the country using a forged passport. Acting on a tip-off, the Lehli police team detained him moments before boarding his flight to Kenya.
According to SHO Sub-Inspector Amandeep Singh, Vikramjit was found using forged documents to obtain a passport, highlighting serious identity fraud concerns. Vikramjit and his wife, Karamjit Kaur, are wanted in six to seven immigration fraud cases registered across four districts in Punjab. The couple allegedly duped multiple victims of millions of rupees by falsely promising to send them abroad, mainly to countries like Canada.
One notable complaint was lodged in 2023 by former soldier Nirmail Singh at Lalru police station, where Vikramjit and his wife were accused of taking Rs 25 lakh to send his son to Canada but failed to fulfill the promise.
The accused frequently shifted locations across districts to evade arrest. While Vikramjit was apprehended on Thursday, his wife and son have reportedly reached Kenya.
Following his arrest, Vikramjit was produced before a Derabassi court and remanded to four days of police custody for further investigation. Authorities are coordinating with international agencies to trace his wife and son in Kenya as the probe continues.
