Liberia Police Arrest Suspects in Fake Scholarship Scam

Fraud using VP Koung’s name targets Liberians for money

by Sophia Bennett

Monrovia, Liberia — On July 15, 2025, the Liberia National Police arrested several people accused of running a fake scholarship scam using Vice President Jeremiah Koung’s name. The scam promised scholarships, including study opportunities in Canada, to trick Liberians into paying money.

The arrests happened at the Zone-3 Police Station in Congo Town, near Monrovia. One accused, Obediah Mattar, said he was just visiting a friend involved in network marketing and denied any part in the scholarship scam.

Police found a receipt showing one victim was charged $1,000 for a fake scholarship after paying an initial $200. Another suspect, called Samuel, said he runs an online health and wireless product business and was only sharing his experience when arrested. Samuel works under the business Infinity Millionaire and is a partner of QNet, a company that offers online business education programs, not scholarships.

Princess Kolakeh, another detainee, said she sells health products through network marketing and was unaware of any scholarship fraud. Princess M. Gongloe, also arrested, confirmed she sold health products to a client named Faith but denied involvement in any scholarship scams.

QNet has faced multiple fraud allegations in West Africa, with several arrests of its agents linked to similar scams.
