Gregory Twigg Convicted of Murder in Street Attack on Iraq War Veteran
STOKE-ON-TRENT, UK — Gregory Twigg, 32, has been found guilty of the murder of British Army veteran Lee Woodward, who died 10 months after suffering a brutal assault in a street attack.
On the night of June 24, 2022, Twigg delivered three “powerful and cowardly” punches to Lee Woodward, 39, in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, leaving him with catastrophic brain injuries. The veteran never recovered and died in hospital on April 26, 2023.
Mr. Woodward, a medically-retired Iraq War veteran, had been out for the evening with his fiancée, Kate Griffin, and had left The Liquor Vaults pub in Trade Street just minutes before her. It was during this time that he became involved in a confrontation with the occupants of a Vauxhall Astra passing by.
During the trial at Stafford Crown Court, jurors heard that Twigg punched Woodward three times in quick succession. The blows left the veteran unconscious and fatally injured.
After just under three hours of deliberation, a jury of seven women and five men returned a guilty verdict. As the verdict was read, Mr. Woodward’s family was seen in tears, whispering “yes” as justice was finally served.
Prosecutors described the attack as senseless and devastating, emphasizing the long-term suffering endured by both Woodward and his loved ones.
The case has drawn national attention, particularly due to Mr. Woodward’s military service and the tragic timeline of events following the assault.
