Two separate incidents of attempted grand larceny have led to the arrest of four men in New York.
On June 20, 2024, New York State Police apprehended Jadeja S. Jayrajsinh and Adity Mevawala, both 24 and from Ontario, Canada. The arrests occurred after a 75-year-old female victim reported receiving a phone call accusing her of a crime. The caller instructed her to hand over a substantial amount of cash to avoid arrest. Suspicious of the request, she contacted the authorities. Police arrested Jayrajsinh and Mevawala while they were collecting the cash at the victim’s home. They were later released on their own recognizance after appearing in Oswego County CAP Court.
In a separate case on June 27, 2024, Zi Liu and Juan Liu, both 29 and from Brooklyn, NY, were arrested for similar charges. A 72-year-old male victim was led to believe his cash app had been hacked. Following instructions from a caller, he withdrew $38,000, thinking it would protect his funds. The victim recognized the potential fraud and alerted the police. State Police arrested both men as they attempted to pick up the cash and subsequently took them to the Oswego County Jail for arraignment.
Authorities are urging the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious calls, especially those targeting vulnerable seniors.
