A 32-year-old Staten Island man, Stephen Cappas, was charged in connection with the theft of a $27,500 diamond ring from Macy’s in the Staten Island Mall, according to authorities. Cappas, a Graniteville resident, allegedly posed as a prospective customer to execute the heist on Sept. 15, asking to see a GIA Certified Diamond Solitaire Engagement Ring, which was stored in the store’s safe.
After inspecting the ring, Cappas is accused of fleeing the store with the diamond, leaving the staff shocked. Law enforcement sources indicated that Cappas was familiar to some employees, having examined jewelry in the store multiple times leading up to the theft. On the day of the incident, he allegedly used a fake name, requested to see the ring under better light, and seized the opportunity to escape with the valuable item.
Following public calls for tips, Cappas was apprehended 12 days later and has since pleaded not guilty to charges of grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, and petit larceny. He was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled for a court appearance on Nov. 13.
Attorney Patrick Parrotta, representing Cappas, stated that they are reviewing surveillance footage to confirm the true identity of the person responsible for the theft, defending his client’s innocence.
