North Carolina Woman Charged with Insurance Fraud

April Thomas Faces Felony Charges for Allegedly Defrauding AFLAC

by Sophia Bennett

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced the arrest of 43-year-old April Thomas from Vass on charges of insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special agents from the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division reported that Thomas allegedly fraudulently obtained $8,660 in accident insurance from the American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus (AFLAC) on January 18.

Thomas was arrested on June 10, fingerprinted, and subsequently released on a written promise to appear in Moore County Court on June 13.

Commissioner Causey emphasized the financial impact of insurance fraud, stating, “Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet. Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar go to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”

The public is encouraged to report any suspected insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes. Reports can be made anonymously by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840 or toll-free at 888-680-7684.
