EDGEWATER, FL — A 57-year-old Central Florida woman, Danielle McGinnis, has been arrested and charged with seven counts of aggravated animal cruelty after authorities discovered the remains of several pets in a long-abandoned home.
Edgewater Police responded to a residence on Pine Tree Drive after receiving a report of potential animal abuse. The property had been vacated for over a year following a civil dispute, and entry was granted to stakeholders. Upon inspection, officers found the decomposed remains of two dogs, two cats, and three birds inside the home.
According to the police statement, the animals had no access to food or water, and investigators believe they died from starvation or dehydration. The home was described as being in deplorable condition, with extensive damage and animal feces throughout, rendering it uninhabitable.
Neighbors confirmed that McGinnis had not been seen at the residence in nearly a year.
Authorities located McGinnis in Daytona Beach, where she was interviewed by police. She reportedly admitted to leaving the animals behind when she moved, claiming she had asked a friend to care for them but could not provide any name or contact details.
McGinnis was arrested and transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail, with bond set at $70,000.
Edgewater Animal Control later removed the deceased animals from the property for respectful and appropriate handling.
This case adds to ongoing concerns over animal welfare and neglect in Florida, where aggravated animal cruelty is considered a felony offense.
