A former Alexander High School football player, Martell Bakari Varner, 24, of Winston, was arrested Thursday after police say he used a fake bar code to fraudulently obtain nearly $700 in gift cards at a local store.

Varner faces 14 counts of theft by deception and 14 counts of first-degree forgery, according to authorities.

The investigation revealed Varner’s scheme involved duplicating bar codes to make unauthorized purchases, leading to his multiple felony charges.
