PAWTUCKET, R.I. – A probationary officer with the Providence Police Department, Destiny Viera, was arrested Friday morning in connection with a drug investigation in Pawtucket, officials confirmed.
Viera, 25, had been serving as a probationary patrolwoman since September of last year. According to Pawtucket police, she now faces multiple drug-related charges stemming from the ongoing investigation.
Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez addressed the arrest, saying, “Based on the seriousness of the allegation and the standards that we uphold in the Providence Police Department, this individual will not be retained by the Providence police.”
Perez added that Viera’s actions do not reflect the integrity or high standards of the department.
The incident has sparked concern and disappointment among local residents. “It’s kinda crazy to hear, a police officer distributing drugs—I’m baffled,” said Alex Cotto of Providence. Angela Greenhagen added, “I think it probably happens a lot more often than we think it does.”
The City of Providence reported that Viera had been earning $72,582 annually.
Also arrested in the drug operation was Jaylan Lopez, 24, who faces charges of conspiracy and drug possession.
Both Viera and Lopez are scheduled to be arraigned Saturday by a bail commissioner.
