Hamilton police have charged Jeffrey Smith, the common-law partner of missing woman Shalini Singh, with second-degree murder after partial human remains linked to her were found at the Glanbrook Landfill.
Det.-Sgt. Daryl Reid announced that DNA analysis confirmed last month’s discovery of remains belongs to 40-year-old Singh, who vanished in December 2024.
Smith, 42, a Burlington resident, was arrested without incident and also faces charges of indignity to human remains.
Singh was last heard from on December 4 and reported missing six days later. Initial investigations included searching for both Singh and Smith, who was later located visiting family outside Hamilton.
Police assigned the case to the homicide unit early on due to “emerging evidence.” Extensive surveillance footage showed Singh returning to her residence but never leaving, leading investigators to suspect foul play.
Using GPS data, authorities focused on the Glanbrook Landfill, launching a detailed search in February. The difficult search through large amounts of waste culminated in the discovery of Singh’s remains.
Police believe she was killed between the evening of December 4 and early December 5.
Detective Reid acknowledged the emotional toll on Singh’s family, emphasizing the importance of providing answers after months of uncertainty.
The investigation continues, with police aiming to conclude the landfill search soon despite challenging conditions.
