Tavares Thompson Held Without Bond in New Drug Arrest

Second drug case in 6 months adds to probation violation

by Sophia Bennett

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — Less than six months after a previous drug-related arrest, Tavares Antonio Thompson, 31, of Chaptico, has once again been charged in connection with suspected narcotics and paraphernalia—this time during a traffic stop in St. Mary’s County on May 16, 2025.

The stop occurred around 12:30 a.m. near Great Mills Road and Australia Drive, when a sheriff’s deputy pulled over a silver Chevrolet Cruze for an inoperable tag light. During the stop, deputies witnessed an object being thrown from the front passenger-side window—later identified as a digital scale with suspected cocaine residue.

The driver was identified as Jessica Adele Kearney, 39, of Leonardtown. Both Kearney and Thompson were charged after deputies recovered multiple drug-related items throughout the vehicle, including:

A plastic smoking device with suspected crack cocaine residue

A handbag containing two hypodermic needles, foil, folded papers with powdery residue, and a metal spoon

A green-yellow rock-like substance—presumptively tested as cocaine base—in the center console

A second glass smoking device found in Thompson’s jacket

Thompson allegedly admitted to owning the glass pipe and the digital scale, stating he uses them to smoke crack cocaine. He denied knowledge of the other items, though investigators noted all materials were within a shared area between the driver and passenger seats.

Thompson also had an active bench warrant for violating probation from a 2024 conviction involving crack cocaine. He had previously been sentenced to one year in jail, with all but 90 days suspended, followed by two years of supervised probation. That probation was still active at the time of this new arrest. The April 29 warrant for the violation was served during the traffic stop.

Both individuals were transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center. Thompson was charged with:

3 counts of drug possession (not cannabis)

3 counts of possession of CDS paraphernalia

Kearney was charged with the same six misdemeanors and released on her own recognizance. Her court date is scheduled for July 1.

Thompson appeared before Judge Karen Christy Holt Chesser on May 19 for a bond review and was ordered held without bond. A violation of probation hearing is set for June 24 in District Court.

If convicted on the new charges, Thompson could face additional jail time and revocation of his previously suspended sentence.
