Delhi Police have busted an online fake degree racket with the arrest of two accused, Kapil Jhakar (32) and Damini Sharma (33), and the seizure of hundreds of counterfeit degrees, officials said on Wednesday.
The duo allegedly defrauded a victim of over Rs 1,55,000 under the pretext of reissuing an original graduation degree.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Nidhin Valsan, the case came to light in March when a contractual employee at an IT firm in Gurugram, who was under consideration for permanent employment, lacked a valid graduation degree despite having his marksheet.
The victim’s manager referred him to Kapil Jhakar, who promised to help secure the degree. Jhakar collected multiple payments totaling Rs 1,55,874 on various pretexts but provided only an unsigned, invalid degree from Manav Bharti University. The degree was rejected by the firm, and the accused blocked the victim’s calls on March 20.
An FIR was registered, and police launched an investigation. Jhakar had changed his phone and location, but detailed surveillance led to his arrest in Bohal village, Bhiwani, Haryana. His mobile phone was confiscated for forensic analysis.
Further probe uncovered the involvement of a woman. Police raided the Karkardooma area and arrested Damini Sharma, recovering three mobile phones, five SIM cards, and hundreds of fake degrees.
A case has been registered against both under relevant sections of the law, and investigation is ongoing to dismantle the racket further.
