by Ananya Mehta

A Bangladeshi man was arrested on Friday, followed by the apprehension of his Indian associates on Saturday, after the Shakespeare Sarani police recovered over 7.8 kg of gold worth Rs5.2 crore.

The arrested individual, identified as Goutam Chandra Saha, alias Mithu, along with a goldsmith from Bowbazar named Uttam Pal, orchestrated a scam involving another goldsmith from Titagarh. On July 17, they tricked Amal Roy, the victim, into coming to a hotel in Minto Park under the pretense of exchanging gold ornaments for what they claimed were genuine gold bars.

Police utilized CCTV footage from the hotel and surrounding areas to trace the suspects. Mithu was seen conducting the exchange inside the hotel, while his accomplice waited outside. After Mithu left the hotel, he fled with Jitan Pal, another goldsmith from Bowbazar, who was later identified and arrested.

Following this, a team from the Shakespeare Sarani police station conducted a raid in the Muchipara police station area, leading to the arrests of both Jitan and the primary suspects, Uttam and Goutam.
