TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) — A man was arrested late Wednesday morning following a brief police chase in West Topeka that began after he failed to stop for authorities.
According to the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, a K-9 unit attempted to pull over a gold Honda Pilot just before noon near the intersection of S.W. Huntoon Street and S.W. Wannamaker Road. The driver, later identified as 32-year-old Ricardo Salgado-Romero of Topeka, refused to stop, leading deputies on a short pursuit.
The chase concluded in the parking lot of a hotel located at 1300 S.W. Arvonia Place. Deputies conducted a search and discovered illegal narcotics during the course of their investigation.
Salgado-Romero was taken into custody and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. He faces multiple charges, including:
Possession of an opiate, opium, narcotic, or stimulant
Possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to use
Operating a motor vehicle without a valid license
Failure to yield to an emergency vehicle
Driving with an obstructed windshield or window
Three counts of violating offender registration requirements
Authorities noted that Salgado-Romero is a non-compliant registered drug offender, having failed to register during the required month.
The investigation remains ongoing.
