GRANTS, N.M. — A New Mexico Corrections Department officer was arrested after a monthlong investigation into allegations of sexual assaults involving female inmates.
According to New Mexico State Police (NMSP), multiple women reported that 21-year-old Elijah Williams, a corrections officer at the Western New Mexico Correctional Facility, sexually assaulted them while he was on duty. Investigators found credible evidence supporting these allegations, prompting the investigation, which began in April.
Williams voluntarily turned himself in to NMSP on Thursday, May 15, and was booked into the Cibola County Detention Center. He faces four counts of criminal sexual contact and an additional charge of battery.
Alisha Tafoya Lucero, Cabinet Secretary for the New Mexico Corrections Department, confirmed that Williams has been terminated from his position. “We acted immediately, terminating the individual and notifying State Police,” she said. “We have zero tolerance for any misconduct, and any officer or staff member who engages in misconduct will be fully removed and referred for criminal prosecution to the fullest extent.”
Williams’ arrest marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and safety within correctional facilities. The investigation remains open.
