NEWTON, Texas (KTRE) – A Newton County woman, Gayla Caldwell, has been arrested following a child endangerment investigation launched after her newborn baby reportedly tested positive for multiple controlled substances at birth.
Newton County Sheriff Colton Havard stated that deputies initiated a criminal investigation after receiving allegations involving Caldwell’s newborn. The case was developed in collaboration with the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS).
Authorities conducted interviews and gathered evidence, which was presented to a judge. As a result, an arrest warrant was issued, and Caldwell was taken into custody.
She is currently charged with abandonment or endangerment of a child and booked into the Newton County Jail, according to Sheriff Havard.
