WHEELING, WV — The Wheeling Police Department announced Thursday morning that two men have been charged with murder in separate cases.

Dwayne Herring, 53, of Wheeling, has been charged with one count of murder following a month-long investigation conducted by both the Wheeling Police Department and the Albemarle County Police Department in Charlottesville, Virginia. Meanwhile, Dennis Terrell Evans, 37, of Fairmont, has been charged with one count of murder stemming from a 2023 malicious assault case that later resulted in the victim’s death.

Dwayne Herring Case:
On March 21, 2025, authorities responded to a home in the 400 block of South Front Street after Kathleen J. Herring, 56, was found deceased inside. Initial investigation revealed signs of foul play, leading detectives to suspect homicide. Her body was sent for autopsy to the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office, where preliminary results confirmed the cause of death as homicide.

After a joint investigation, the Albemarle County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit located and arrested Dwayne Herring on April 28, 2025, in Charlottesville. Herring is currently held in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail and awaits extradition back to West Virginia.

Dennis Terrell Evans Case:
In a separate incident, on July 28, 2023, Christine Lynn King, 49, of Wheeling, was found unconscious in a yard on Fink Street with visible injuries. She was initially transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital but died on October 20, 2023, from her injuries. An autopsy confirmed that King’s death was a result of blunt force trauma and was ruled a homicide.

Following an extensive investigation involving interviews, forensic evidence, and crime scene analysis, Dennis Terrell Evans was charged with murder on May 1, 2025. Evans, who was already incarcerated in Saint Mary’s Correctional Center on an unrelated felony charge of strangulation, is serving a three-year sentence for the earlier conviction.

The Wheeling Police Department and local law enforcement agencies continue to investigate these cases. The authorities are committed to bringing justice to the victims and their families.
