FORT MYERS, Fla. (CBS12) — A late-night traffic stop in Fort Myers led to the seizure of two kilograms of fentanyl and the arrest of James Pitts, 39, of Broward County, who is reportedly tied to a larger drug trafficking operation.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), the incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. on Interstate 75 near Colonial Boulevard, when members of the Narcotics Team pulled over a rental vehicle. During the stop, K-9 Knox alerted deputies to the possible presence of drugs.
A subsequent search revealed two tightly wrapped kilograms of fentanyl hidden behind the passenger seat.
The vehicle’s passenger, James Pitts, was taken into custody. Investigators later confirmed that Pitts is connected to a drug trafficking ring that transports illegal substances from the East Coast into Lee County.
“This is a clear message: I will not allow dealers from anywhere to distribute poison on our streets. They will be tracked down, and we will hold them accountable,” said Sheriff Carmine Marceno.
The arrest was made through a joint operation between the Lee County and Collier County Sheriff’s Offices, reinforcing local law enforcement’s ongoing efforts to combat narcotics trafficking in Southwest Florida.
