Ontario County, N.Y. — A Farmington man is facing a felony charge after an investigation uncovered alleged fraud involving public assistance benefits, authorities said.

According to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year-old Jonatan Encamacion-Diaz was arrested following a detailed probe into suspected welfare fraud. Investigators allege that Encamacion-Diaz received Department of Social Services (DSS) benefits while failing to report income from his employment.

The investigation, which was launched after a tip to law enforcement, determined that Encamacion-Diaz concealed his earnings between November 2023 and March 2024, allowing him to unlawfully collect DSS benefits during that time.

He has been charged with felony grand larceny and is scheduled to appear in Hopewell Town Court at a later date to respond to the charge.

As with all criminal cases, the charge is merely an accusation, and Encamacion-Diaz is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
