Ofure Prince Akpolo Sentenced to 3 Years for $22K Internet Fraud

Benin Court Convicts Akpolo for Retaining Proceeds of Cybercrime

by Sophia Bennett

Ofure Prince Akpolo has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for his involvement in a $22,297.97 internet fraud. The conviction was handed down by Justice W.I. Aziegbemhin of the State High Court in Benin, Edo State.

Court Proceedings and Conviction

Akpolo was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a one-count charge of retention of proceeds of crime. He pleaded guilty to the charge, which detailed how he took possession of the fraudulently obtained sum in his domiciliary account at First City Monument Bank. The fraudulent activity occurred on June 3, 2024.

The EFCC’s charge against him stated that Akpolo knew the funds represented proceeds of cybercrime, violating Section 18 (1)(a) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act 2004.

Sentencing and Asset Forfeiture

Despite the defense counsel’s plea for leniency, claiming remorse on behalf of Akpolo, Justice Aziegbemhin sentenced him to three years imprisonment. However, the court allowed for an option of a ₦500,000 fine. Additionally, the court ordered Akpolo to forfeit his phone, all balances in his various bank accounts, and other assets related to his criminal activity to the Federal Government of Nigeria. He was also required to provide a written undertaking of good behavior following his sentence.

Arrest and Prosecution

Akpolo’s conviction followed his arrest by operatives of the Benin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC for his involvement in cyber fraud. His prosecution and subsequent conviction highlight ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to combat online financial crimes.
