In a daring operation in Hollongi, Assam, Basumatary, a suspected drug dealer, was arrested on Saturday evening after a high-speed chase and gunfire exchange with the police. The police had received a tip-off regarding Basumatary’s movements, and when they signalled his vehicle to stop, he attempted to flee, leading to a pursuit.
During the chase, Basumatary opened fire on the police, prompting a retaliatory response from the law enforcement team, led by SDPO Kengo Dirchi. Despite the intense gunfire, the police exercised restraint to avoid civilian casualties. Unfortunately, two officers sustained injuries during the operation. Basumatary was taken to R K Mission Hospital for medical treatment after his arrest.
A search of Basumatary’s vehicle, conducted in the presence of magistrates and independent witnesses, led to the recovery of 12 grams of suspected heroin hidden inside a green soap box near the spare tire. Authorities also seized a US-made firearm and six live rounds of ammunition from the vehicle.
A case has been registered at Chimpu police station, and a special investigation team led by Inspector Rina Sonam has been assigned to handle the legal proceedings. The authorities have urged citizens to stay vigilant and cooperate with the ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes in the region.
