REGINA, Saskatchewan — Daniel “Juma” Atem, 32, who was previously listed among Canada’s most wanted fugitives, has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of 32-year-old Roman Miller on July 29, 2023.
Police allege that Atem shot and killed Miller at a location on the 2100 block of Regina’s Broad Street. Miller was pronounced dead at the scene. Atem, who had been on the run for several months, was arrested in Winnipeg on January 15, 2024.
Atem appeared briefly in Regina provincial court via video on Tuesday. While no lawyer appeared on his behalf, Atem informed the court that he had been in contact with legal counsel and requested a multi-week adjournment. Judge Daryl Rayner granted the adjournment but emphasized that he expected a lawyer to be ready to proceed by the next court date in March, especially as some of Atem’s charges, including drug trafficking charges, were becoming outdated.
Court documents reveal that Atem is also facing drug-related charges. On June 18, 2022, he allegedly possessed fentanyl and cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, along with over $5,000 in cash obtained through drug trafficking activities. Additionally, Atem faces charges of failing to appear in court and breaching a release order.
Atem’s arrest followed a reward of up to $50,000 offered by the Regina Police Service in October 2023. At the time, he was listed as No. 14 on Canada’s “Most Wanted” list, part of the BOLO (Be On the Lookout) program. Prior to his placement on this list, Atem, along with co-accused Shedrek Samuel, was wanted on Canada-wide warrants.
Samuel, who was also charged with first-degree murder in connection with Miller’s death, turned himself in to police in February 2024. His case is still pending in court.
Atem’s case will continue in March, as the court moves forward with the serious charges he faces.
