Myanmar’s military government has detained Hiroshi Kasamatsu, a director of Aeon Orange, alongside numerous local businessmen for allegedly selling rice at prices significantly above the government-regulated rates. Reports indicate that 62 individuals were arrested in connection with this crackdown, affecting 102 warehouses, 53 supermarkets, and 25 mills across major cities .
Kasamatsu’s arrest comes amid a backdrop of economic challenges in Myanmar, where civil unrest has hampered recovery efforts from the COVID-19 pandemic. The military seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021, leading to widespread protests and armed resistance. A recent World Bank report highlights that nearly one-third of the population lives in poverty, with the economy currently about 10% smaller than pre-pandemic levels .
The allegations against Kasamatsu suggest that rice was being sold at prices 31% to 70% higher than those set by the Myanmar Rice Federation. The potential penalties for these violations range from six months to three years in prison .
Japanese officials have confirmed the arrest, with Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi stating that the government will provide support through its embassy and call for the swift release of Kasamatsu .
