Mary and Frank Blakley, a couple from Lake Havasu City, Arizona, have been arrested and indicted on multiple felonies for allegedly running a chain of medical clinics that offered fraudulent cancer treatments. Federal prosecutors announced the charges, which include conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, and violating the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
The Blakleys operated clinics across Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah, offering patients full-body scans using an ultrasound machine that they falsely claimed could cure a range of ailments, including leukemia. For approximately $300 per session, patients were told that the scans could provide benefits such as cleansing the lungs, brainstem, and even killing cancer cells.
Mary Blakley, who allegedly misrepresented herself as a doctor or PhD, is accused of misleading patients into believing that the ultrasound machines could perform a variety of medical procedures, including colonoscopies and prostate exams. After these “treatments,” the couple would sell supplements, creams, and veterinary products, claiming they could treat ailments discovered during the scans.
However, neither the machines nor the prescribed substances were FDA-approved for treating any diseases, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ). The clinics were marketed under various names, such as Sonic Waves Research, Living Well Ministry, and Health Scans, and operated since 2011.
Mary Blakley allegedly used multiple pseudonyms and last names, making it difficult for authorities to trace her actions. The couple’s medical fraud scheme affected many patients who were led to believe they were receiving legitimate treatment.
The FBI is urging anyone who may have used the Blakleys’ services or knows someone who did to submit a report through an online form.
