by Sophia Bennett

Two Detroit residents, Michael Eugene Keel, 66, and Kiera Marquis Stevens, 33, were arrested on Friday, Jan. 17, after attempting to cash forged checks at the ELGA Credit Union in Holly. Both face felony charges for uttering and publishing a fraudulent check, with each count carrying a potential 7-year sentence.

Holly police responded to the scene at 15223 N. Holly Rd., where officers found Keel in a vehicle in the credit union’s parking lot. Stevens was seen exiting the building. Credit union staff had grown suspicious due to Stevens attempting to cash two cashier’s checks issued in her name, but the staff was immediately alerted when she struggled to provide details about her grandfather’s account, from which the checks had supposedly been issued.

Further investigation revealed that Keel and Stevens had visited another ELGA Credit Union branch the previous day, using a fake ID in the name of an actual account holder. They had withdrawn large sums of cash and arranged for the checks to be issued to Stevens. Holly officers filed a fraud report and detained both suspects at the scene.

During the investigation, officers recovered false identification documents and additional evidence linking Keel and Stevens to the fraudulent activity. Stevens was also found to have 14 open arrest warrants and a prior conviction for driving without a license, while Keel had three open warrants and a history of unarmed robbery.

Both suspects were arraigned on Monday, Jan. 21, with bond set at $15,000 for Stevens and $10,000 for Keel. A probable cause conference is scheduled for February 10, according to the Holly Police Department.

This incident marks the third major financial fraud case in Holly since November 2024, with bank and credit union staff playing a key role in detecting suspicious behavior and alerting law enforcement.
