In a major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking, Biswanath Police successfully seized a large quantity of ganja and arrested Bitul Senapati, the owner of the vehicle involved in transporting the contraband. The operation took place on Sunday after a tip-off about a vehicle carrying ganja traveling from Tezpur to Biswanath Chariali.

Acting on the intelligence, a team of police officers, led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Biswanath Chariali Police Station, set up a Naka (checkpoint) near Sadharu on NH-15 to intercept the vehicle. At around 11:30 am, a suspicious vehicle was spotted driving erratically, which stopped about 400 meters before reaching the checkpoint. When officers approached, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled toward the Sadharu Tea Estate, using the heavy rainfall to escape.

Upon inspecting the abandoned vehicle, a Tata Yodha with registration number AS-07/BC-5712, police discovered it had been involved in an accident with another unidentified vehicle. A thorough search revealed twenty-two white plastic bags, which were concealed under sacks of cabbage. The bags were found to contain a total of 314.68 kg of ganja, with an estimated market value of Rs 1,57,34,000.

The contraband was seized in the presence of witnesses, and a case was registered under Biswanath Chariali PS Case No. 180/2024 for violations under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Assam Bhang & Ganja Prohibition Act.

In a follow-up operation, led by the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), a team apprehended the vehicle’s owner, Bitul Senapati, a 31-year-old resident of Merkathoni in Lakhimpur District, on Monday. The investigation into the case continues, with the Superintendent of Police and ASP (Crime) overseeing the probe to uncover more details about the drug trafficking network.
