A 28-year-old man, Adam Watson, has been jailed after carrying a knife into a hospital emergency department in Nottingham. The incident took place at the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC), where Watson arrived with a blade in his waistband early on 18 January.
Upon discovering the knife, hospital staff alerted police, and officers quickly responded, arresting Watson at the scene. He was charged with possession of a knife in a public place and appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 20 January. Watson admitted to the offence and was sentenced to eight months in jail.
Nottinghamshire Police Sergeant Natham Phipps praised the quick actions of both hospital staff and police officers, stating, “There is never any excuse for carrying a blade in public. It endangers everyone in the vicinity, and in this case, it resulted in immediate action and a jail sentence.”
Victoria Fensome, Divisional Nurse for Medicine at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, commended the hospital team for their professionalism. “While most patients treat our staff with respect, we will not tolerate verbal or physical abuse. Our priority is the safety of staff, patients, and visitors.”
This case serves as a reminder that carrying weapons in public can lead to serious legal consequences, as demonstrated by Watson’s swift conviction and jail sentence.
