A High Court in Bauchi State has sentenced Usman Abdullahi to death by hanging for the murder of Zaidu Adamu Kofar Dumi, following a dispute over a phone charger.

Justice Sa’ad Muhammad Sambuwal, presiding over High Court No. 9, found Abdullahi guilty of both grievous harm and culpable homicide, violating Sections 239 and 221 of the Penal Code.

The prosecution, represented by Barrister Abubakar Ahmed Kobi from the State Ministry of Justice, stated that on May 12, 2021, Abdullahi had a heated argument with Zaidu Adamu and his friend, Ziya’u Abdulhadi, over a phone charger. During the altercation, Abdullahi allegedly stabbed Zaidu multiple times with a knife.

Zaidu was quickly taken to Specialist Hospital in Bauchi, where he was declared dead by doctors.

The trial, which began on December 30, 2021, saw Abdullahi facing charges of grievous harm and culpable homicide. The court was told that the victim had sustained multiple stab wounds to his stomach, neck, and other parts of his body.

In his defense, Barrister Naziru Umar presented two witnesses and requested the court show leniency towards Abdullahi.

After reviewing all arguments and evidence, Justice Sambuwal convicted Abdullahi of culpable homicide and sentenced him to death by hanging, as per Section 221 of the Penal Code. For the charge of grievous harm, Abdullahi was also given a five-year sentence in correctional service, in line with Section 239 of the Penal Code.
