Waldina Aranky Charged in Emergency Grandparent Scam

Woman Allegedly Targeted Seniors for Bail Money

by Amelia Crawford

A 35-year-old woman is facing multiple charges in connection with a fraud investigation targeting senior citizens. Dubbed the Emergency Grandparent Scam, this scheme involves phone calls to seniors, claiming that a family member—typically a grandchild—has been arrested and requires money for bail.

Investigators report that during a recent incident, a woman arrived at a victim’s home in a 2014 black four-door BMW sedan to collect cash that had been requested in a previous phone conversation.

Waldina Aranky of Toronto is now facing five charges, including three counts of fraud over $5,000, attempted fraud over $5,000, and fraud under $5,000.

Authorities believe there may be additional victims and are urging anyone with information to reach out. Police are also reminding the public to never allow strangers into their homes, refrain from sharing personal information over the phone, and recognize that police or court officials do not collect money in person.
