ABERDEEN, NC — A violent child custody dispute led to a shootout in Aberdeen on Christmas Eve, resulting in three arrests.

On December 24, 2024, Aberdeen Police, with the assistance of Moore County Sheriff’s Deputies, responded to multiple reports of shots fired in the area of Midway Road and Victory Lane around noon. When officers arrived, they found a large group of people and a male subject suffering from gunshot wounds to his back and side.

A second shooter was also located at the scene, along with shell casings from three separate firearms. Investigators determined that a third shooter had already left the area, and only one firearm was recovered. The injured man was transported to Moore Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Following the investigation, Jaquan Goins, 20, and Garrett Chalmers, 26, both from Aberdeen, were arrested on January 3, 2025, and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and discharging a firearm within city limits.

Maurice Purcell, 39, of Fayetteville, was arrested on January 6, 2025, facing two counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, felony possession of a firearm by a felon, and discharging a firearm within city limits.

Goins and Chalmers were given $500,000 secured bonds, while Purcell was denied bond and will face a hearing before a judicial official. The investigation continues as authorities analyze evidence and gather additional statements from witnesses and involved parties.
