LAWTON, Michigan — A 58-year-old Lawton man, Gordon Leighton, has been arrested by the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office on charges of contractor fraud and operating without a license. The arrest follows a complaint filed in August 2024 by a family who hired Leighton to rebuild their home after it was destroyed in a fire.

According to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office, the family came forward with concerns after Leighton failed to meet expectations or complete the necessary work on the property. The investigation revealed that Leighton was not properly licensed for the type of contracting work he had agreed to perform.

Leighton has been taken into custody, and the investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to look into other possible victims of contractor fraud.
