Eastpointe, Mich. — McKinnley Hearon has been sentenced to four years in connection with the fatal shooting of his brother, Reginald Hearon, in June 2023.

Hearon pleaded guilty on November 7, 2024, to second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and lying to police officers. However, following a potential self-defense claim and input from the family, an agreement was reached to sentence him within manslaughter guidelines.

The incident took place on June 15, 2023, when Hearon shot and killed his brother, who was reportedly struggling with mental health issues at the time.

Prosecutor’s Statement
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido expressed his condolences, stating, “The tragic circumstances surrounding this case are heartbreaking, as they involve the loss of a life and the profound impact on a family already grappling with the challenges of mental illness.”

Lucido further emphasized the complex nature of the case, highlighting the balance between accountability and compassion in reaching the sentencing agreement.

The family’s wishes were taken into consideration as part of the resolution, with hopes that this sentencing brings healing and closure to the grieving family during an incredibly difficult time.
