Antwon Chambers, 32, was charged with the murder of 34-year-old Terryn Winters, who was found dead in an abandoned house in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood on December 9.
Prosecutors revealed that Chambers and Winters had met a few weeks before her death. Chambers, recently paroled after serving 12 years for criminal sexual assault, had been living in a halfway house just blocks from the abandoned home where Winters and her son, Daryn Stanton, had been staying. Chambers is listed on the Illinois State Police’s sex offender registry.
The tragic discovery occurred on December 8, when Daryn, Winters’ 14-year-old son, called for help after realizing his mother was missing. Police found her body the next day in the attic of the vacant home, located on South Normal Boulevard. Authorities later uncovered a pipe wrench near her body and evidence linking Chambers to the crime, including surveillance footage showing him entering and exiting the house on the morning of December 8.
Winters’ phone, found in a nearby alley, contained disturbing images and a $7 money transfer from Winters to Chambers, along with his deleted contact information. Winters’ family members, including her sister, expressed concern about the living conditions in the abandoned house, where Winters and Daryn had been staying for months after Winters lost her job.
Daryn, grieving the loss of his mother, expressed his pain, stating, “I feel like I’m not really feeling my true scope of emotions, like I’ve dissociated from them.” He is now planning to move with his aunt to Moline, away from the painful memories in Chicago.
At a bond hearing on Sunday, Judge Shauna Boliker ordered Chambers held pending trial, noting the brutality of the circumstances. Chambers’ next court appearance is set for Tuesday.
