Tirunelveli Taluk police have registered three separate cases against individuals from different castes following provocative social media posts related to the murder of Mayandi near the entrance of the Tirunelveli court complex on Friday.
Mayandi, an individual from an intermediate caste, was murdered reportedly as an act of retaliation for his alleged involvement in the killing of Rajamani, a SC ward member from Keezhanatham in August 2023. In the wake of the murder, youths from both communities have been posting inflammatory content on platforms like Instagram, glorifying the actions of the murderers and escalating communal tensions.
Superintendent of Police, N Silambarasan, stated that the district police have heightened their efforts to monitor social media platforms and prevent potential communal violence. He revealed that 27 cases had been registered in 2024, with similar arrests and legal action taken in 49 cases in 2023 for similar offenses.
In connection with the recent developments, the police arrested 24-year-old Vallimuthu from Seevalaperi for allegedly posting incendiary material online. Authorities are continuing to investigate the situation and remain vigilant in curbing social media-driven communal discord.
