Charlotte, N.C. — Dareem Dante Gaskin, 28, was sentenced to 23 to 28 years in prison for his role in the murder of 28-year-old Deante Brown in 2020. Gaskin was found guilty on November 26, 2024, of second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The events leading to Brown’s death began when Gaskin had a disagreement with a woman, which prompted her longtime boyfriend, Deante Brown, to intervene. The two men agreed to meet at West Trade Street to settle the dispute with a fight. Surveillance footage revealed that Brown, after removing his shirt to show he wasn’t armed, approached Gaskin. Gaskin then raised a firearm and shot Brown multiple times, including once in the back. Brown died from his injuries shortly afterward in the hospital.
In a separate case, another man involved in the incident was convicted of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle and was sentenced to two years in prison, but was released in 2023.
Along with his lengthy prison sentence, Gaskin will be required to pay restitution to Brown’s family.
