MELBOURNE, Fla. (CBS12) — A routine patrol led to the arrest of Matthew Korecky, a convicted felon, early Thursday morning in Melbourne. Deputies from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) encountered Korecky while he was in a wooded area along Eau Gallie Boulevard.
When Korecky spotted the deputy, he attempted to conceal a piece of aluminum foil and a bag containing a green powdery substance. The deputy noticed his suspicious actions and detained him. A more thorough search uncovered a stolen firearm, 17.4 grams of methamphetamine, 8.3 grams of fentanyl—enough to cause lethal doses for over 4,000 individuals—and four muscle relaxer pills.
Korecky, prohibited from possessing a firearm due to his prior felony conviction, was arrested and booked into the Iron Bar Lodge. He faces multiple charges, including trafficking in fentanyl and methamphetamine, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is being held without bond.
Sheriff Wayne Ivey stressed the department’s ongoing commitment to removing dangerous substances from the streets. “I don’t care who you are, or where you live; if you have this poison in your possession, we’re going to find you and get it off our streets,” Ivey said.
