Dr. Nagen Chandra Das, the former principal of Amranga Borihat Higher Secondary School, was arrested on Tuesday night for allegedly embezzling Rs22.65 lakh over a period of five years. The arrest took place in Mirza, Kamrup Rural, after an investigation uncovered financial irregularities in the school’s accounts.
Dr. Das, who served as the principal from 2012 to 2017, is facing charges under of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with Sections 443/24. The embezzlement was discovered during a routine government audit, which flagged discrepancies in the school’s financial records.
The issue came to light when the school management committee submitted a petition to Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, highlighting the alleged financial mismanagement. Upon receiving the complaint, the Chief Minister directed the state’s vigilance department to investigate the matter thoroughly. The school management and other local organizations have also been actively involved in supporting the investigation.
Dr. Das allegedly misappropriated funds amounting to Rs22.65 lakh between 2012 and 2017, using his position as principal to divert the funds. The charges include fraud and breach of trust, and he is currently being held at Palashbari Police Station as the investigation continues.
The authorities have promised to take strict action against those involved in the scam, and further investigation is underway to determine if any other individuals were complicit in the financial misconduct.
