If you’re job hunting and receive an offer from a well-known job portal claiming you’ve been shortlisted, be cautious—it could be a scam. In a recent breakthrough, the Cyber Police Station of Central District, Delhi, exposed a gang of cyber criminals who were impersonating a reputed job portal to deceive job seekers.
The gang members, Nikhil Tyagi, Ankur Sharma, Varun Bhandari, and Suraj Kumar, residents of Baghpat (UP) and Fazalpur and Shakarpur (Delhi), were arrested from New Ashok Nagar in Delhi. The police recovered two mobile phones and two laptops from their possession.
The scam began when the accused contacted a woman claiming that her resume had been shortlisted by Wipro through a well-known job portal, Naukri.com. They told her that she needed to pay a service charge of Rs 2,500 to proceed with the job offer. Despite initial reluctance, the woman was persuaded to make the payment when the scammers assured her the money was refundable.
After making the payment, the victim was subjected to a fake interview and soon after, the criminals continued to demand more money for various charges, totaling Rs 1,25,150. Realizing that she had been duped, the woman filed a complaint with the NCRP portal, leading to an investigation by the Delhi Police.
DCP M. Harshvardhan confirmed that the police team had successfully traced the suspects and apprehended them, dismantling the cybercrime syndicate in the process. The accused are believed to have been targeting multiple victims in similar fashion, using fake job offers to extort money.
This case highlights the growing threat of cyber frauds targeting job seekers. The Delhi Police has urged the public to be vigilant against such scams and verify any job-related offers before making payments. It is important to always cross-check details and avoid sharing personal financial information with unknown sources.
The investigation is ongoing, and the police are working to uncover the full extent of the gang’s operations.
