A second man has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of Gogglebox star George Gilbey, who fell from a roof while working in Shoeburyness, Essex, on March 27. The 40-year-old electrician, originally from Clacton-on-Sea, suffered fatal injuries after falling through a skylight while working on a building site.
Essex Police confirmed that a 36-year-old man from Witham had been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. This follows the earlier arrest of a 47-year-old man, also from Witham, who has since been released under investigation.
A joint investigation between Essex Police and the Health and Safety Executive is ongoing, as authorities continue to look into the circumstances surrounding the fall. A short inquest hearing earlier this month revealed that Gilbey’s injuries were consistent with a fall from height. The coroner’s officer stated that Gilbey had been working on a roof when he tragically fell through a plastic skylight.
Gilbey, who was known for his appearances on Channel 4’s reality series Gogglebox from 2013 to 2018, had a vibrant personality, described as generous, funny, and kind by his family. His mother, Linda McGarry, spoke to the Clacton Gazette, describing her son as a “devoted father” who “did more in his 40 years than people do in 90.”
The death of Gilbey, also known for his time on Celebrity Big Brother in 2014, has sparked an outpouring of support, with more than £3,000 raised online to assist his family during this difficult time.
