Nikita Singhania, along with her mother Nisha and brother Anurag, have been arrested in connection with the tragic death of Atul Subhash, a 34-year-old techie from Bengaluru. Atul, who died by suicide on Monday, had left behind a detailed suicide note and video accusing his ex-wife and her family of harassment and extortion.
According to Indian Express, the arrests were made across different locations. Nikita was arrested in Gurugram, Haryana, while her mother Nisha and brother Anurag were detained in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. All three were produced before the court and subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
The case stems from a bitter and prolonged legal battle over divorce and child custody, which Atul reportedly cited as a major factor contributing to his emotional distress. Atul, originally from Samastipur in Bihar, was found dead in his apartment in Munnekollal, Bengaluru. His brother, Bikas Kumar, filed a complaint alleging that Nikita and her family had driven Atul to take his own life.
The Marathahalli Police have filed an FIR naming Nikita as the first accused, followed by her mother and brother. They have been charged under Sections 108 (abetment of suicide) and 3(5) for a criminal act with common intention.
Atul’s suicide note, found at his residence, began with the chilling phrase: “Justice is due,” and was followed by detailed accusations against his ex-wife and her family. The note and a video released by Atul pointed to extortion demands. He claimed Nikita and her family had sought Rs 3 crore to withdraw legal cases against him and an additional Rs 30 lakh for visitation rights to see his son.
The couple’s marriage, which began in 2019 after they met on a matchmaking website, had reportedly soured over time. They welcomed a son in 2020, but their relationship faced increasing tension. In 2022, Nikita filed a police complaint against Atul, accusing him of harassment, assault, and demanding dowry. She also claimed that Atul’s family’s dowry demands had led to her father’s stroke and eventual death.
However, Atul’s suicide note presents a contrasting narrative. He accused Nikita and her family of exploiting him financially and emotionally, leading him to take the extreme step of ending his life.
Following Atul’s death, the Bengaluru Police launched an investigation and summoned Nikita and her family for questioning. Despite their denial of the allegations and their claim of innocence, the police proceeded with the arrests after gathering evidence from the suicide note and video.
The Singhania family had sought anticipatory bail, asserting that they were being falsely accused, but the investigation has led to their detention. The case has brought to light a tragic and deeply troubling dispute that escalated into a heartbreaking loss of life.
