A man from Assam has been arrested for allegedly cheating a woman of Rs90,000 in an online fraud by posing as a retailer selling iron rods at unusually low prices.
The accused, identified as Soribuddin Ahmed, was apprehended from Kutubpur in Bihpuria, Assam. The arrest was carried out on Thursday by a police team from Papu Hills Police Station led by Inspector Gejum Basar, along with Assistant Sub-Inspector M Rebe and Constable Pankaj Saikia.
According to police, the case was registered under Sections 318 and 319 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act.
The complaint was filed by a woman who transferred ₹90,000 as an advance payment to a fraudster identifying himself as ‘Md Ashiqul Alom’. The accused allegedly promised to supply iron rods at discounted rates but failed to deliver the goods after receiving the payment.
Nyelam Nega, Superintendent of Police of Naharlagun in the Itanagar Capital Region, confirmed the incident and the arrest.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Subdivisional Police Officer Rishi Longdo and guided by Papu Hills Police Station officer-in-charge Inspector Torun Mai.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious while making online purchases, especially when deals appear unusually cheap.
