In a major crackdown on cyber fraud, the Cyber Crime wing of the Hyderabad Police arrested four men allegedly involved in an online gambling and betting scam worth Rs1.5 crore. Officials disclosed the arrests on Wednesday after uncovering a network that targeted victims through deceptive online promotions.
The accused were identified as Mohammed Syeed Uddin, Mohd Tajuddin, Mohd Younis, and MD Ayub. According to investigators, the group carried out the fraud by using multiple SIM cards registered in the names of family members and acquaintances to avoid detection while contacting victims.
Police said the suspects circulated fake advertisements on social media platforms, posing as agents of the betting website BETINEXCHANGE. The ads promised high profits through online gambling activities such as cricket betting and Teen Patti.
Authorities believe Mohammed Syeed Uddin played a central role in the operation. Investigators revealed that he previously worked at a call center in Dubai and allegedly used his experience to manage communications and arrange SIM cards used in the scheme.
Victims were initially encouraged to invest small amounts with the assurance of quick returns. However, after gaining their trust, the scammers reportedly demanded larger deposits while blocking withdrawals, causing significant financial losses.
A case has been registered under Sections 66C and 66D of the Information Technology Act, 2000 along with other applicable provisions related to cyber fraud and cheating.
Police officials said the investigation is ongoing to trace the money trail and identify additional bank accounts linked to the scam. Efforts are also underway to freeze the accounts used by the accused and recover funds lost by victims.
