The Madhepura Police arrested a 34-year-old man, Vijay Kumar Singh, for impersonating a police officer from the vigilance department and extorting money from commuters in Madhepura district on Monday.
Police recovered a fake police identity card from Singh during the arrest. Investigations revealed that he had met an individual outside a Bihar Sub-Inspector exam centre in 2022, who offered him a deal to work as a fake officer for Rs17 lakh. Singh was promised a monthly salary of Rs15,000 for the role.
According to police, secret information reached the Madhepura Sadar Police about a man illegally stopping passing vehicles while posing as a vigilance department officer and extorting money. A team led by SHO Vimlendu Kumar immediately responded. Upon seeing the police vehicle, Singh, dressed in an army T-shirt, attempted to flee but was caught after a brief chase.
ASP Pravendra Bharti stated that during interrogation, Singh initially continued to claim he was a vigilance officer. Under strict questioning, he revealed his true identity. Singh is the son of Abhay Kumar Singh, a resident of Chandaur Hanuman Nagar Ward-10, Saur Bazar Police Station, Saharsa, and is currently staying as a tenant in Nathun Munshi’s house, Bhirkhi Ward-22, Madhepura. He has been sent to judicial custody.
Police recovered a fake ID card labeled “Special Duty Officer Police, Post SI Officer, State-Bihar,” which was confirmed to be completely forged. Locals also reported that Singh frequently stopped vehicles at the spot claiming to be a police officer and extorted money.
Further investigation revealed that Singh met an unknown man during the Bihar SI exam in 2022, who provided him with the fake ID card and promised a monthly salary. The police team included Sub-Inspector Nadeem Akhtar, Sachin Kumar, and personnel from the police station armed force.
Authorities are continuing the investigation to uncover any other accomplices or victims of the impersonation scheme.
